Each morning, we pick a direction for travel, by noon, we see where our tires had taken us and find a place to rest for the night. This freedom allowed us to truly inhabit the ride-to feel the shift in geography as the hills rolled into mountains and to catch the changing scents of pine, damp earth and wild honeysuckle that drifted on the air with every turn.

Leaving the City Behind: The Rt. 6 Ribbon
The journey begins as the urban edges of Richmond fade in the rearview mirror. Heading west on Route 6 (River Road), the pavement initially stretches out flat and easy, but it doesn't stay that way for long. As you cross into the countryside, the road begins to undulate, mimicking the gentle pulse of the James River nearby.
This stretch is a masterclass in "unwinding." You pass through corridors of ancient hardwoods and past the gates of prestigious wineries and sprawling horse farms. There is a specific kind of freedom found here—on a road that many commuters bypass for the interstate, but which rewards the motorcyclist with a relaxed, rhythmic flow. The stress of the week dissolves into the rolling hills of Goochland and Fluvanna.

Reinvigorated, the ride continues west on Route 60. Passing through Appomattox, you feel the weight of history in the rolling fields before picking up Route 24 in Concord. This stretch toward Roanoke is where the "backroad" philosophy truly shines.
Route 24 offers a more technical and scenic alternative to the main highways, carving through the rural heartland with purpose. Experience the magic of a Friday morning in SW Virginia as we wake up to a stunning sunrise. After a quick workout to invigorate our minds and bodies, we hit the back roads, starting off on Rt. 11 through the charming town of Salem. Here, you can enjoy a stroll down Main Street and even explore the beautiful Roanoke College campus just a block away Our adventure continues with a stop at Glenvar Minute Market for some delicious egg and cheese biscuits, fueling us for the scenic ride towards Blacksburg, where the crisp morning air and smooth roads await.

With our bodies fueled and ready we set off towards Blacksburg, taking in the crisp morning air and the stunning sunrise over the majestic mountains along Rt 11. As we transitioned to Rt. 460, the ride became even more enchanting, with smooth curves and hills that hugged the New River's banks. After a small detour in Rich Creek, where we missed our turn to Lewisburg, we decided to embrace the adventure, turning off our maps to immerse ourselves in the surroundings. Our journey led us down Rt. 42 south, through the scenic beauty of Walker Mountain, eventually arriving in Bland, before backtracking to Rt. 100 and discovering a fantastic Mexican restaurant, La Cabana Mex Grill, in Radford.

We zipped through amazing towns like Blacksburg, Shawsville, and Salem, with some unexpected turns that made the ride even more thrilling! The day kicked off with a refreshing chill and a breathtaking sunrise, and we soaked in stunning mountain views along the way. We wrapped up our adventure under a magnificent old oak tree, buzzing with energy as we shared laughs and stories about our unforgettable day!

Embarking on our final leg of the backroads journey, we left Lexington on Rt. 39, fueled by a delightful breakfast on the large side porch of the charming Hampton Inn. Which is a beautifully historic converted home perched on a hill with breathtaking sunrise views. A perfect way to enjoy a morning coffee.
Our route along the Maury River led us through the stunning George Washington & Jefferson National Forest, where nature's beauty surrounded us. As we approached the quaint town of Goshen, we transitioned to Rt.42, continuing north through Churchville and into Bridgewater This spectacular drive along the base of Shenandoah Mountain showcased rolling hills, smooth flowing streams, and the enchanting sight of old barns and homes that whispered tales of history.

Here, you can immerse yourself in a variety of outdoor activities, from hiking trails to serene fly fishing spots. As we wrapped up our journey, we made a stop in Bridgewater before continuing south on Rt. 11. A few miles later, we turned left onto Rt. 616, seamlessly connecting to Rt. 254, which led us into Waynesboro. The last stretch featured fresh air, smooth roads, and picturesque farmland, making it the perfect conclusion to our adventure. With time running short, we decided to hop on I-64 West to head back to Richmond.
