Sometimes, the most amazing adventures are the last-minute ones! Just yesterday, my father-in-law and I decided to hit the road for a thrilling 48-hour trip, with only our overnight stay confirmed. The route between Richmond and Winchester, Virginia, is packed with gorgeous winding country roads that offer breathtaking sights. Whether we dive into the wonders of Luray Caverns or just revel in the stunning beauty of our national parks and adventure around historic WInchester, Va....this adventure is bound to be absolutely unforgettable!
Historic Winchester
As mentioned above, The only pre-planned part of this adventure was lodging. With summer travelers I thought it was wise to lock in somewhere to rest after a full day of twist and turns under the July sunshine beating down on us. So, we locked down a room in Winchester at Hampton Inn university/mall area, but I did call to confirm the outdoor pool is open !
I suspect after a full day on the road the poolside break will be nice , along with a little refreshment.

Embarking on a 48-hour adventure covering 493 miles, with temps in the high 90s is quite the thrill when you're on two wheels. Starting from Richmond, VA, we rolled out to Scottsville on Route 6, a classic route that sets the stage for our journey. This leisurely ride not only prepares us for the winding country roads ahead but also offers a glimpse into history. Take a moment to stop in Scottsville, nestled along the James River, where you can enjoy a casual stroll and soak in the charm of this lovely town.
If time allow and you are hungry or thirsty check out Tavern on the James, downtown Scottsville.
As we depart Scottsville after a little break , we continued on Rt.6 towards Rt.29 which was a phenomenal little stretch of small rolling hills and road overlapped with large oaks providing nice cool shad on a hot summer day. After picking up rt.29 south for a couple miles we jumped on 151 north at Woods Mill towards Waynesboro. This stretch provides picturesque views of mountains, wineries and breweries. I must say this leg of the trip was my favorite ! This would be a wonderful day trip in a car or motorcycle but plan on stopping and soaking in the scenery while visiting one of the many wineries along this path.
Blew through Waynesboro and jumped on rt. 340 north heading to Front Royal, Va..a beautiful route running along base of the Shenandoah National Park. Passing through small town such as Grottoes, Elkton and Luray.
If time allows drop into Luray Caverns, located in Luray, Va..it is worth the stop or catch Skyline Drive and embrace a ride along mountain top with beautiful scenic overlooks.

Los Potrillos in Front Royal, VA, was the perfect stop as we up our day craving tacos and refreshing drinks. The friendly staff made us feel right at home, and the food was not only hot but bursting with flavor. To top it off, we enjoyed watching some thrilling World Cup soccer while we dined. It was a fantastic experience that left us eager to return!
After a full day of riding it was nice to wind down poolside at the Winchester Hampton Inn University, Mall area. Time to discuss next days journey !

Riding along US 522 towards Springs, we pass through the historic charm of Winchester. The four-lane stretch opens up, allowing us to soak in the crisp morning air and the rolling hills, with the majestic Allegheny Mountains creating a stunning backdrop. We took a refreshing break to savor some spring water and enjoy a delicious “nutty buddy” snack. As the sun climbed higher in the sky, the warmth enveloped us, making our pause even more delightful.

Finally, roll into Harrisonburg and set your sights on Rt. 33, where smooth turns will guide you through Shenandoah National Park on your journey home.
As we arrived in Harrisonburg, VA, we made our way to Route 33, also known as Spotswood Trail, for the final leg of our adventure. The drive through the base of the Shenandoah Mountains was exhilarating, with twists and turns that kept us engaged. Thankfully, it was a weekday, so we encountered little traffic, allowing us to fully appreciate the stunning scenery. As we cruised along, our hunger grew, and our sights were set on finding some delicious Mexican just beyond Charlottesville, VA.
El Jaripeo in Ruckersville, VA, is the perfect stop for anyone craving delicious Mexican cuisine. With its quick service and relaxed atmosphere, it offers a welcoming vibe that makes dining enjoyable. The tacos here are exceptional, ranking high on our list of favorites. After a satisfying meal, we were ready to tackle the final 79 mile st of our journey back to Richmond, VA!
Every journey begins and ends with a simple prayer for safety on the roads. After an incredible 48-hour trip, we realize it's not about the length of the adventure but the quality of the experience.
